Brindi's Book List

These are the Bull Terrier and dog books that we have in our personal library. If you are interested in the breed and are considering getting your own bull terrier, we recommend reading a book on Bull Terriers as it may be helpful in deciding if bullies are the dog for you. Once you've done some research and decided that a bully might be the dog for you, you'll want to find a reputable breeder. Some good information on bull terrier breeders has been put online at the Corsaire Bull Terrier website.

Ratings: We will be rating the books that we have read using a scale of one to five Brindi symbols . Five is the best rating and one the poorest. If a book is not yet rated, we are still reviewing it.

Boodil, My Dog
by Pija Lindenbaum
This is a children's book, but adults will love it, too! It's witty, cute, and the illustrations are wonderful. This little book never fails to make me smile.

Bull Terriers Today
by David Harris
This is a beautiful book! Just open the cover and you'll see wonderful full-color pictures of Bull Terriers on nearly every page. Includes history of the breed as well as individual descriptions of breeders in both the U.S. and Europe. We were lucky enough to be able to get our copy signed
by Mr. Harris when we met him at a dog show.

The Canine Good Citizen
by Jack & Wendy Volhard
Tells all you need to know to help you train your dog to become an AKC Canine Good Citizen (CGC). Brindi got her CGC on September 12, 1999 at the Conejo Kennel Club dog show.

Culture Clash

by Jean Donaldson

The Dog Who Loved Too Much
by Dr. Nicholas Dodman
This is an excellent book on animal behavior. Well-written, highly readable, and informative. Dr. Dodman has worked quite a bit with Bull Terriers, and in fact dedicated an entire chapter in this book to the breed. Topics include dominance-agression, fear-agression, separation anxiety and more.

DogStar
by Beverley & Chris Wood
This book is fiction, but Patsy Ann was a truelife Bull Terrier heroine that lived in Juneau, Alaska in the 1930's. In 1934, the mayor named Patsy Ann the "Official Greeter of Juneau, Alaska." The book has plenty of action and fun, but it also makes you cry. Patsy Ann also has her own web site which we recommend just as highly as the book!

Don't Shoot the Dog
by Karen Pryror
An excellent book on training (dogs or other animals... even people!) using mainly positive reinforcement. This book has wonderful information, but I found it a bit hard to keep my interest going. Would still recommend it though!

Give Your Dog a Bone
by Dr. Ian Billinghurst
Feeding your dog a natural bones and raw food diet. Quite a few typos, but excellent information!

Good Owners, Good Dogs
by Brian Kilcommons
While this book is not about Bull Terriers, there are quite a few pictures of the author's training techniques being demonstrated on a mini bull terrier puppy. The book is about picking, caring for, training, and living with a dog of any breed.

Grow Your Pups With Bones
by Dr. Ian Billinghurst
Raising puppies on a natural bones and raw food diet.

The New Bull Terrier
by John Remer
This book was the first Bull Terrier book that we had recommended by a breeder that we visited when looking for a dog. It discusses the history, breeding and more.

Raising a Puppy You Can Live With
by C. Rutherford
This book was recommended to us before we got our BT as a preparation. It's about getting and taking care of a puppy during the first year of his or her life.

Reigning Cats and Dogs: Good Nutrituion, Healthy Happy Animals
by Pat McKay
Another book on natural, raw food diet.

The Ultimate Diet: Natural Nutrition for Dogs and Cats
by Kymythy R. Schultze
This is the first book I purchased on feeding a natural, raw diet to our animals. It is clearly written and easy to read and assimilate quickly. While some of the other books that I own do have more in depth information, this is the book that I would highly recommend as an introduction to the natural diet. I still find myself reaching for it when I want a quick reference. I found the menu suggestions very helpful also.

On Talking Terms With Dogs: Calming Signals
by Turid Rugaas
