Guarding the Fridge - August 1998

This is a story about my new puppy, Brindi. Today she was sleeping on my lap when all of a sudden my sister droped a magnet off the refridgerator door. She woke up and started barking under her breath, jumpted off my lap and ran to see if the refridgerator was safe. What a good watch dog! She's really funny.

Stalking - August, 1998

More of the funny things Brindi does... Today she was biting on my sister's shoe, so my sister told her NO BITE. Then my sister walked to the table, and Brindi started doing froglegs and crawling towards real slow. Then my sister turned her head back and looks at her. Brindi stoped and looked to the side. Then when my sister turned her head around again, Brindi started to crawl towards her again. She was trying to stalk my sister! I cracked up... she's silly.

Brindi's First Stay in a Hotel - January, 1999

This past weekend, Brindi competed in her first 'real' dog show and got to sleep over in her first hotel room.

After the long, boring car ride, she was ready to play. When we got in the room, she immediately spotted another dog in her room and started wagging her tail. She ran right over to play with the other dog, which was wagging its tail, too!

Then all of a sudden, 'BAMM!', she ran into the mirrored wall head first. After stepping back and giving herself a little shake, she again tried to sniff the other dog. It didn't smell like much from that side, so being a very smart dog, Brindi figured out that the dog must be on the other side of a glass barrier. Deciding she'd go around, she looked for another way to get to the other dog... but then she ended up in the bathroom. No other dog was there. :-(

She just couldn't understand where that other dog was! Getting a bit frustrated, she next spent a few minutes barking at it. It barked back. For the next several hours she kept a close eye on that dog, but it never seemed to come any closer and in fact kept copying her every movement. Finally Brindi either realized that it was her own reflection, decided the dog was out of her reach and gave up on it, or maybe just felt it was too boring to bother with since it wouldn't come over and play.

Opening the Door

We knew Brindi was smart... but she still amazed us when we saw her figure out how to open a closed door on her own.

She jumps up on her hind legs, takes the door knob firmly in her mouth and twists it from the side using her weight to help her turn the knob. She's not successful with heavy doors (such as the front door), but a closed lightweight interior door poses no problem for this girl anymore!

The Origin of Dogs and Cats - Unknown Author

It is reported that the following edition of the Book of Genesis was discovered in the Dead Sea Scrolls. If authentic, it would shed light on the question, "Where do pets come from?"

And Adam said, "Lord, when I was in the garden, you walked with me everyday. Now I do not see you anymore. I am lonesome here and it is difficult for me to remember how much you love me."

And God said, "No problem! I will create a companion for you that will be with you forever and who will be a reflection of my love for you, so that you will know I love you, even when you cannot see me. Regardless of how selfish and childish and unlovable you may be, this new companion will accept you as you are and will love you as I do, in spite of yourself."

And God created a new animal to be a companion for Adam. And it was a good animal. And God was pleased. And the new animal was pleased to be with Adam and he wagged his tail.

And Adam said, "But Lord, I have already named all the animals in the Kingdom and all the good names are taken and I cannot think of a name for this new animal."

And God said, "No problem! Because I have created this new animal to be a reflection of my love for you, his name will be a reflection of my own name, and you will call him DOG."

And Dog lived with Adam and was a companion to him and loved him. And Adam was comforted. And God was pleased. And Dog was content and wagged his tail.

After a while, it came to pass that Adam's guardian angel came to the Lord and said, "Lord, Adam has become filled with pride. He struts and preens like a peacock and he believes he is worthy of adoration. Dog has indeed taught him that he is loved, but no one has taught him humility."

And the Lord said, "No problem! I will create for him a companion who will be with him forever and who will see him as he is. The companion will remind him of his limitations, so he will know that he is not worthy of adoration."

And God created CAT to be a companion to Adam. And Cat would not obey Adam. And when Adam gazed into Cat's eyes, he was reminded that he was not the supreme being.

And Adam learned humility. And God was pleased. And Adam was greatly improved. And Cat did not care one way or the other.
